For the first time and what is considered as a major breakthrough, the Indian Army has started inducting women as Jawans in the Military Police Corps. The aspirants can apply online as part of the registration process. Until now, women were only being recruited at the officer level. However, from now onwards, they can work as soldiers too.
The online registrations have started on 25th April and will continue until June 8th.
In January this year, the Indian Government cleared the decks for inducting women as Jawans. There was an announcement of the government’s ‘historic’ decision to recruit women in the military forces. The objective of such a move was to increase their representation in the armed forces.
Moving forward, the women will comprise 20 percent of the Corps of Military Police. And their roles would range from investigating crime cases to supporting the Army in operations – whenever the need arises.
