The start of the year 2019 saw people taking up the 10-year Challenge – which is, actually, not as challenging as the other internet fads. The trend only gives you another excuse to post another picture of yourself on social media. The 10-year challenge (also, known as the 2009 Vs 2019 Challenge) entails posting 1 picture of yourself in both the years 2009 and 2019 – that is 10 years apart. On social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, the memes started going viral with users taking up the challenge to compare themselves from the past and future.
Some celebrities (like Padma Lakshmi, Malaika Arora, and Nick Cannon) went a step ahead and posted pictures that were 20 years apart.
However, the fad has met with a lot of criticism, with many proclaiming that it is another way of bragging how hot or irresistible you were then and still continue to be.
It was being indicated that people want to gloat about their ageless beauty and is the reason for them to take up the challenge. Well, celebrities have their dermatologists to fall back upon, but what about the average person? There were others who were apologizing for gaining weight within the 10-year span. Now, is that really fair?
It is believed that the only way to win the challenge was if you age in reverse or not age at all, and create confusion as to which year the pictures actually belonged to.
Others have dubbed the challenge as an opportunity to relive some of the most painful times in their lives, and then getting closure that helps in starting life on a fresh note.
Nonetheless, the 10-Year Challenge was criticized largely because the challenge seems to be a ploy designed by Facebook for developing facial progression algorithms on age progression. As such, facial recognition software could be devised for understanding the human aging process of a fixed duration. Subsequently, advertisers or law enforcement agencies could apply the software to their own advantage – to sell products or track citizens respectively.
Yet again, the most popular reason for users warming up to the 10-year challenge was deemed to be that people love uploading their pics on social media, mostly the ones that make them feel nostalgic.
So, keeping in mind the evils of social media, the question is whether you are up for the 10-year Challenge or not?
